I bought Redlaser for $1.99 on the app store. I was thoroughly annoyed when a few months later, they dropped the price to free and thousands of users now had what I paid for at no cost. When Occipital, the company that created Redlaser, released a new camera app called Clearcam, I tweeted:

“Kind of want to buy ClearCam by @occipital. Think I’m going to hold off because it will probably be free soon. Like RedLaser.”

Not even two hours later, I received a message offering a coupon code for Clearcam- I promptly accepted and downloaded the $1.99 app free of charge. I was just flipped from being a ticked off user to a friendly fan in a couple of clicks. It was a pretty interesting and great experience. The app is great too- you can find out more about what it does and download it here.

And here’s my first test photo with it, of my most favorite adhesive. Great quality and clarity:

Sometimes I wonder if designers are a 1st world commodity. Is our role simply to perpetuate the vain pursuits of our consumerist society? Am I a communist? No. Then I ran across this quote by Brian Reed:

Everything is designed. Few things are designed well.

It hit home. From the crappy restaurant sign down the road to the upscale store design in the mall… That’s when I realized that as long as we exist, design is a necessity. It may not always be a priority, but it’s an indispensable part of any organized civilization. Don’t tell me tribes in the Amazon don’t have designers either, because they do. Look at their rainsticks.

Student branding project for a kids tea company? Sounds weird, but I think it has potential!

This project was a comprehensive branding project I did as a student. We were charged to create a tea or coffee brand. I didn’t want to go with the typical browns and greens, so I did a ton of research and concluded that there was a small, yet potentially profitable market for flavored tea for kids. In places like the UK, where tea is an integral part of culture, caffeine free tea for kids could be an intriguing venture. Or at least I thought so at the time…

Check out my sweet little graph. I was trying to visualize my personal workflow and downfalls. I realized that my worst productivity happens right after a big strain. I can be highly productive for a short period of time with long hours, but eventually the creativity disappears, my brain shuts off. Once you’re blocked, you better get outside, or read a book or do one of the 20 things the clever people over at GoMedia do to get over it.
I don’t consider myself to be a great world traveler, but when I started to think about it, I’ve been to some really great places. Maybe not The Louvre, or Istanbul (man I really want to go to Turkey), but a lot of really great places. I decided I’m not going to keep track by countries, because I’ve only been to a handful. I’m picking places that I remember, and don’t want to forget. We’ve all been somewhere I guess (queue my cheesy punchline) but I’ve been there.

Looking back at old work builds character. When I look back at work I’ve done, it brings the value of that idea in to focus. Over time you can really start to see if your ideas have metal or not, whether they were worth the time and if you should re-invest. This particular project was a pretty good idea, but poorly executed. I don’t think anyone’s ever seen this, but I think I’ve come a long way since, if not, then wow I have some work to do.
